Secrets of age

Days pass like leafy messengers floating on the breeze,

Quiet, unobtrusive, they fall away

Revealing the bough on which they grew and growing had their day.

The rising sap of spring made the crowning leaves of summer,

And now…

Now its autumn and the leaves gently fall, carried on the wind.

Sap retreats, feeling the touch of frost in the air,

The branch remains,

Still, silent, in the forest. defying the blast of winter.

When gales come it moves and sighs

Giving shelter…

Though lost forever seems the gentle running current

That dressed it so beguilingly in foliage.

Once there were many leaves,

Now but few.

Life’s autumn season is one of humility,

Yet reveals, hidden strength.

Dainty leaves couldn’t stand the frost

But,  grown supple in summer storms,

The bough can weather winters blast for

Deep within,

Unseen, unheard,

The living sap awaits the spring

To burst forth,

Rising to the heavens to dress the boughs in splendor.

The sap has not gone,

The tree yet lives.

Its boughs collecting beauty of a different sort;

More splendid than before

Dressed in white, it patterns the heavens.

It is in winter a tree is seen,

When nothing of vanity remains,

Just strong, lithe limbs

Reaching upward in defiance of earthly weights.

Its power and beauty revealed,

A sight to stir the senses.

Fear not these passing days

Leaves that fade before your eyes

Skiming, dancing in the wind.

Naked, leafless, you stand

Winds pass your empty branches

Finding naught on which to take hold

As you sway and dance in its presence.

One day,

The sun will rise.

You’ll feel tingling deep in your roots.

You’ll know what it is,

For you felt its coming before,

The sap rises.

Why “like a child”?

Jesus said, “except you become as a little child,” and held up a child as an example to his disciples quarrelling about who was the greatest? Why?

With thinking of very young children innocence generally springs to mind, but there’s more to it than that. Let’s ponder.

  • Lack of guile- Small children have not yet learnt to deceive. Not only can they not lie effectively but they can’t pretend to be what they are not, smile when they are hurt, pretend friendship, play a role. They are who they are, and they don’t try to cover up their feelings. They have yet to don a “mask”.
  • They love – freely, unconditionally and without fear of being rejected.
  • Not manipulative- they didn’t learn how yet.
  • Not threatening – no one if afraid of a child.
  • They believe anything – there are no limits to a child’s faith.

I’m starting to understand!

The songs were moving today as we recalled another world, another time, and those that died. Yet we see through modern eyes, we do not understand, too long ago…

I was surprised to hear of the Bibles each soldier carried, how so many died with God’s love written, bound, on their chest or before their eyes.

They did not fear death as we, they were stronger, tougher. Even as a child I remember their strength. Even the weakest had faith.

I recall the story of my own grandfather at one of the Christmas Eve ceasefires, when German and British exchanged gifts and showed photos, played football and buried their dead.  When the gift of Christmas overcame the manipulations of politics and greed.

(See movie “Joyous Noel”)

Free theropy anyone?

OK, I confess. I’ve been listening to Christmas carols (already lol!) It’s such a wonderful blast of joy and celebration after all the gloom and doom of halloween, armistice and midterm political mud slinging (not to mention the Brexit doomsayers!) If you’re feeling a little down or gloomy I highly recommend it. Just don’t let on to anyone why you’re sporting such a big grin lol!

Is that really what you want?

“Sometimes you are unsatisfied with your life, while many people in this world are dreaming of living your life.
A child on a farm sees a plane fly overhead and dreams of flying. But, a pilot on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of returning home. That’s life!! Enjoy yours.
If wealth is the secret to happiness, then the rich should be dancing on the streets. But only poor kids do that.
If power ensures security, then officials should walk unguarded. But those who live simply, sleep soundly.
If beauty and fame bring ideal relationships, then celebrities should have the best marriages. But those who live simply, walk humbly and love genuinely!
All good will come back to you!!!
Man asks, “Where was God when Myles Munroe, wife and his associates were killed in a crash? He answers, “The same place I sat when John the Baptist my servant was beheaded. When Stephen my servant was stoned to death. When Paul my servant was murdered in Rome. The same place I sat when my only Son was brutally crucified, wounded, bruised and killed. I have not moved from my position.”
I am the same. It is not the means of exit from earth that matters but the
destination. Live simply. It’s all about God!”

Dr. Ben Carson (Retired world renowned neurosurgeon, and Republican Presidential Aspirant) wrote this beautiful piece.

Exit Halloween.

Begone you ghosts and ghouls, the vampires and the rest
The day has come to all be gone, take Christmas to our breast.
No more the skulls and skeletons shall grace our shops and malls
The Christmas season soon begins when we with Christ are pals.
The devil’s had his day it seems, but soon t’will be played out.
As Christ eclipses Halloween, it soon shall come about,
That light will chase the shades away, as sun the dark at dawn
And all shall be embraced in love upon that happy morn.
